1. Always read with a dictionary nearby!
2. Use a bookmark!! Bent pages damage a book.

Rules for "Good to Great" Readers!

3. If a book isn’t appealing to you in the first 25-30 pages, turn it in for something else. Reading shouldn’t be a chore.
4. Keep a journal. Write down titles and authors and summarize each book you read. Say what you liked about the book.
5. Read every day!!!!!
6. Visit the library once a week. Be sure to get a card! Get to know the librarian. They love to recommend books.
7. Read a series. Check out the AldenSchoolblog where you can check series and find out which book is #1, #2, etc.
8. Talk about books with your friends. There’s more to life than sports. Be well-rounded.
9. Challenge yourselves to read books that are a little more difficult in content. Read something that is from another culture or genre—science fiction, realistic fiction, mystery, fantasy.
10. Watch a feature movie about a book you’ve read. Compare it with the book to see how they were the same or different.
11. Ask for books as gifts or rewards. Develop a library at home. Recycle books to friends or the public library or to your church or school.
12. Spend time reading good books to your younger siblings or ask an older brother or sister to read to you! Of course, Mom and Dad would always be happy to read with you!

Final Circulation Dates

We are beginning to think about final days of book checkouts.
As of June 6th, we hopefully will have collected all outstanding books and fees for this school year. Please be sure you return or pay for any outstanding books. Checks should be made payable to Alden School.
Be sure to look for the Summer Reading List on this blogsite.
The book chosen for the Middle School "Whole School Read" is "City of Embers" by DePrau. Some of our current fifth graders have read it. It's a great read!

American Girl Book Club

Don't forget the next American Girl Book Discussion is on Wednesday, April 16th at 12:25. The title of the book is "Samantha Saves the Day". Bring your lunch, girls.

National Poetry Month

April is National Poetry Month and National Library School Media Month!
Celebrate the month by borrowing a book of poetry from the Library. Some poets to consider are: Robert Frost, Shel Silverstein, Langston Hughes, Emily Dickinson, Jack Prelutsky and Doug Florian. Be sure to check out the interesting bulletin board created by Mrs. Federoff.
